How to Look Up a Company by EIN

Updated September 30, 2026 · USACIP

Short answer

For most private companies you cannot: the IRS does not publish a lookup of Employer Identification Numbers. An EIN is public only where the company itself files it in a public record — nonprofits in the IRS exempt-organization list, public companies and other SEC filers on their EDGAR filings, most Florida corporations and LLCs (Florida’s corporate records include the EIN the company entered on its filings), and many companies registered in Texas, whose franchise-tax account number is often built from the EIN. Otherwise, search by the company’s legal name and confirm the EIN with the company (a W-9 form).

Where an EIN is public

  • IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search — charities, foundations and other tax-exempt organizations are listed with their EIN.
  • SEC EDGAR — every annual and quarterly report carries the filer’s “I.R.S. Employer Identification No.” on its cover page, and EDGAR full-text search can find it.
  • Florida Division of Corporations — Florida’s corporate data includes the FEI/EIN number the company entered on its filings. It is self-reported and not checked by the state against IRS records.
  • Texas Comptroller — for many entities with an EIN, the 11-digit Texas taxpayer number is “1” + the EIN + a check digit (for example, EIN 94-2404110 appears as 19424041101). Not every Texas account follows this.
  • Documents the company gives you — a W-9 form, invoices or contracts.

How to verify a business by EIN

  1. 1

    Ask for a W-9

A signed W-9 gives the legal name and EIN the business reports to the IRS. The legal name should match the state registration exactly.

  2. 2

    Search the public records above

If the company is a nonprofit, an SEC filer, a Florida entity or registered in Texas, the EIN may lead you straight to its record.

  3. 3

Match the name in the state registry

Search the legal name from the W-9 in the business registry of the state where the company was formed and check that it is active.

  4. 4

Use IRS TIN Matching if you file 1099s

Businesses that file information returns can check a name/EIN pair with the IRS TIN Matching program. It confirms a match; it does not reveal names.

Searching an EIN on USACIP

Type the EIN (12-3456789) into the USACIP EIN Lookup tool or the main search box. We look it up in the IRS exempt-organization list, Florida corporate records, the Texas Comptroller franchise-tax file and SEC EDGAR, and show a company only when that source lists exactly this EIN. A number that none of these sources publishes returns no result — then search by the company name instead.

FAQ

Is a company’s EIN public information?

Not in general. The IRS keeps EINs confidential except for tax-exempt organizations. An EIN becomes public when the company puts it in a public filing, such as an SEC report or a Florida annual report.

Can I find a company’s EIN from its name?

Only if it appears in a public record — a nonprofit listing, an SEC filing, Florida corporate records or some state tax records. Otherwise ask the company for a W-9.

Is an EIN the same as a tax ID number?

An EIN (Employer Identification Number, also FEIN) is the federal tax ID for businesses. States issue their own tax account numbers, which may or may not be based on it.
