How to Find a Company’s Registered Agent

Updated September 30, 2026 · USACIP

Short answer

Look up the company in the business entity search of its state of formation; the registered agent’s name and in-state street address are part of the public record. The registered agent is the person or service that accepts legal papers (service of process) and official state mail for the company.

The registered agent is on the state’s own record. Find the official business search for the state of formation.

How to find it

  1. 1

    Search the state registry

Open the Secretary of State (or equivalent) business search for the state where the company was formed and find the company by name or file number.

  2. 2

    Read the agent section

The record lists the agent’s name and a physical address in that state. If the company is registered as foreign in other states, each of those records names an agent there too.

  3. 3

    Check it is current

Agents change; the most recent annual report or statement of change is authoritative.

What the agent tells you — and what it does not

Commercial registered-agent services represent many thousands of companies at one address, so a shared agent address is normal and says nothing about whether two companies are related. An individual acting as agent, on the other hand, is often a founder or the company’s lawyer.

FAQ

Does an LLC or corporation need a registered agent?

Yes. LLCs and corporations must keep a registered agent with a physical address in each state where they are formed or registered to do business.

Can I serve legal papers on the registered agent?

That is its purpose. Follow the service rules of the court where you are filing.

Is the registered agent the owner?

Not necessarily. It is frequently a paid service or an attorney.
